Kampala, Uganda — A group of concerned youth from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Wednesday stormed the party’s Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, demanding action on a petition challenging the eligibility of Ms Fiona Nakku, a contestant for the NRM National Female Youth MP flagbearer position.
The group, led by their legal representative Aaron Amanya, alleges that Nakku altered her age in order to qualify for the youth representative race. They argue that she does not meet the legal definition of a youth as stipulated under the National Youth Council Act, which defines a youth as a person aged between 18 and 30 years.
“We have brought this petition to ensure fairness in the electoral process. The law must be followed, and anyone who does not qualify should be disqualified,” Amanya told journalists outside the commission offices.
The protestors called on the NRM Electoral Commission to investigate the claims urgently and disqualify Nakku if found ineligible. They vowed to pursue the matter further should the party fail to act.
The NRM has not yet issued an official response to the petition or the protest. However, sources within the party say the matter is under review.
This development comes amid heightened competition for party flagbearer positions ahead of the forthcoming elections.
