PLU Withdraws Endorsement of Among, Tayebwa for Speaker and Deputy Speaker
KAMPALA, Uganda – May 12, 2026 – The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has dramatically reversed its position on the leadership of the 12th Parliament, retracting its earlier endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among for Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker.
In a statement issued for immediate release on Tuesday, PLU General Secretary David Kabanda announced that the endorsement, originally communicated via a letter dated March 11, 2026, has been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”
According to the statement, PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has issued new guidance directing all PLU-leaning Members-elect to instead support the candidates to be presented by His Excellency the President for both parliamentary positions.
The party emphasized its unwavering commitment to its leadership structure, stating: “In the PLU, we follow the command, instructions and guidance of our Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at all times.”
The abrupt reversal marks a significant political shift just days before parliament convenes to elect its leadership for the upcoming term.
