Tooro Coronation in Jeopardy: Last-Minute Court Petition Seeks to Halt Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I’s Installation
Fort Portal, Uganda – The planned coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new King of Tooro is hanging in the balance following a last-minute petition filed at the Fort Portal High Court seeking to halt tomorrow’s installation ceremony.
According to reports circulating on X (formerly Twitter), a group of petitioners—identified as Walezi Wa Katiba, Derick Alitugabira, and Juliet Kangume—rushed to the High Court seeking an emergency order to block the highly anticipated event.
The legal challenge is centered on the succession process. The petitioners claim that the late King Oyo left a Will naming his son, or failing that, his cousin, as the rightful successor to the throne.
They are suing the Omukama of Tooro, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and the Attorney General. As part of their application, they are seeking to compel the Queen Mother to produce the alleged heir named in the late King’s Will.
The court is yet to hear the application, leaving the status of tomorrow’s ceremony uncertain.
Despite the legal turmoil, preparations for the event have been underway, with the President expected to be the Chief Guest at the coronation tomorrow.
The last-minute petition has thrown the royal installation into a state of suspense as the nation awaits the High Court’s decision on whether the ceremony will proceed as planned.
