UGANDA’S TOORO KINGDOM CROWNS NEW KING EDWARD RUKIDI NYABONGO I
FORT PORTAL, Uganda — The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda officially crowned its new monarch, King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, in a vibrant ceremony held at the Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.
The 56-year-old journalist ascends to the throne following his selection by a royal clan committee, a decision that was made despite objections from the royal family. King Edward succeeds his late cousin, King Oyo, who passed away at the age of 34 following a battle with cancer.
The coronation ceremony was a blend of deep-rooted cultural tradition and modern celebration, featuring a mock battle and a bull slaughter. The event was attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who took the opportunity to praise the late King Oyo. During his address, the President urged cultural institutions to avoid possessiveness and focus on their unifying roles.
Crowds gathered to celebrate the new royal couple, King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I and Queen Rebecca Amoding Rukidi. The atmosphere reflected a sentiment of tradition meeting modern life.
In his address to the kingdom, the newly crowned King pledged to protect the customs of the Tooro Kingdom while dedicating himself to serving his people.
