RUKUNGIRI – September 12, 2025
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has closed Boona FM, a radio station in Rukungiri District, sparking widespread speculation and political tension in the region.
The closure prompted public statements from two prominent national figures: retired General Henry Tumukunde and the Minister for Security, Maj. Gen. Jim K Muhwezi (MP). Both have strongly denied any personal involvement in the decision and have urged the public to remain calm.
In a statement released on social media, Gen. (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde acknowledged the closure, which he said has “fueled speculation regarding political motives.” He emphasized that the UCC’s mandate is “clearly stipulated in the law” and revealed that discussions are ongoing between the radio’s management and the regulator to resolve any outstanding compliance issues.
Tumukunde directly addressed his supporters and the people of Rukungiri, urging them to “focus on the challenges that are before us” and to disregard any conjecture that he or his supporters are seeking to politicize the situation for advantage.
Echoing similar sentiments, Security Minister Jim Muhwezi issued a more detailed statement to counter what he called a “fake narrative” being fueled by “obscurantists” who are dragging his name into the matter.
Minister Muhwezi clarified that he was not responsible for the shutdown, stating, “I do not have the authority to do so; it is UCC that holds that power.” He confirmed that the station has had “ongoing compliance issues” with the UCC and suggested that the radio management seek legal redress if they have concerns with the regulator’s actions.
The simultaneous denial from two high-profile individuals with connections to the region highlights the politically sensitive nature of the station’s closure. Both statements aim to distance themselves from the action and frame it as a purely regulatory issue handled by the UCC.
As of now, the UCC has not publicly released a detailed statement explaining the specific reasons for closing Boona FM. The situation remains developing as negotiations between the radio management and the communications commission continue.
