Caught in Mubende: Four Slaughtered Dogs Intercepted on Their Way to Roadside Meat Market

MUBENDE – Police in Mubende Municipality have intercepted four slaughtered dogs whose carcasses were being transported for roasting and sale to unsuspecting members of the public.
The incident happened early Saturday morning around midnight when a routine police patrol vehicle stopped a motorcycle whose rider was carrying a polythene bag and a passenger.
According to police, the rider initially refused to stop, prompting the patrol crew to give chase in order to establish what they were transporting.
During the pursuit, both the rider and the passenger were arrested for failing to stop at a police checkpoint. Officers then searched the suspects and their property, discovering four dog carcasses hidden inside the polythene bag.
Interrogation Reveals Shocking Supply Chain
During interrogation, the suspects told police they were delivering the carcasses to roadside meat markets within Mubende Municipality, where they supply the meat to vendors who sell it as roasted goat’s meat to consumers — particularly travelers.
The Kampala-Mubende-Fort Portal highway is lined with several roadside meat markets where many travelers make stopovers to buy what they believe is roasted chicken or goat’s meat.
Public Warning
Police have since warned the public, especially road travelers, to be cautious when buying meat from roadside vendors along this highway. Many people may have unknowingly been consuming dog meat under the belief that it was beef or goat’s meat.
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue into where the dogs were obtained from, the circumstances under which they died, and the full extent of the distribution network.
