Tooro Kingdom Names Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as New King Amid Disputes and Missing Palace Keys
Fort Portal, Uganda — The Tooro Kingdom’s Supreme Council has received the official announcement of 56-year-old journalist Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the next Omukama (King), following a period of mourning and controversy.
The declaration was made by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi, head of the Babiito Royal Clan, before the Tooro Supreme Council during a sitting at Muchwa Headquarters in Fort Portal City. According to reports, the selection follows the August 27 death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away at age 34.
However, the transition of power has been fraught with disputes. Reports indicate that the declaration was made despite missing palace keys and significant pushback from Princess Ruth Komuntale, who cites a will naming a biological son as the rightful heir. Additionally, Galaxy FM Zzina! reported that Omusuga Charles Kamurasi has formally reported the issue of the missing Tooro Kingdom palace keys.
While Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has publicly voiced his support for the new king, the Ugandan government is holding off on formal recognition until legal channels resolve the ongoing dispute.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (@mkainerugaba) announced his support: “My fellow Ugandans the new Omukama of Tooro is His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. Long may he reign. God bless him always. God bless Tooro.”
The announcement sparked immediate reactions across social media. Andrew M. Mwenda replied to the post stating, “After this, I won’t be heard saying a word on Toro matters. The issue is resolved.”
An account responding as the new King, Edward Rukidi expressed gratitude to the General: “Thank you CDF Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Tooro looks forward to working with you.”
Public sentiment among some Ugandans was also evident, with user SS Sebunya commenting, “Congratulations, His Majesty Edward Rukidi. Thank you, Gen. MK, for your unwavering stand for the truth. The Batooro stand with you.”
As the kingdom awaits formal government recognition, the coming days will likely see continued legal and traditional maneuvering to resolve the contested succession and the mystery of the missing palace keys.
