Exclusive: Inside Museveni, Anita Among Meeting
Among told the President that some of the vehicles and other property seized during recent security operations had been acquired using proceeds from her private businesses rather than public funds.
Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among met President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on June 7 in a brief but closely watched encounter as investigations into her wealth, assets and conduct in office continue.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, Among had for some time sought an audience with Museveni before eventually securing the meeting at State House.
Sources said the two held a short discussion during which Among reportedly asked the President for forgiveness for any mistakes she may have made while serving as Speaker.
However, Museveni is said to have informed her that the issues facing her remained under active investigation by the Inspectorate of Government and the Criminal Investigations Directorate.
“The IGG haven’t finished their report,” Museveni reportedly told Among. “Let us wait for them to complete it,” he reportedly added.
The meeting came amid a widening probe into allegations involving asset declaration, corruption and illicit enrichment that has already seen security agencies search properties linked to Among in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea.
According to sources, Among told the President that some of the vehicles and other property seized during recent security operations had been acquired using proceeds from her private businesses rather than public funds.
She reportedly requested that the vehicles be returned to her.
Museveni, however, advised her to wait for the investigations to be concluded so that all outstanding issues could be resolved comprehensively.
Sources said the President was noncommittal on the request and maintained that investigators should be allowed to complete their work.
Among was later escorted from the meeting and driven away.
The former Speaker, once one of the most influential figures in government, has since been replaced by Jacob Oboth Oboth following her withdrawal from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Investigators recently searched Among’s residences in Nakasero and Kigo, impounded luxury vehicles including a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover, and seized documents and electronic devices that are being subjected to forensic examination.
Sources further indicated that Among’s Nakasero residence remains under surveillance by security personnel, including members of the Presidential Guard and counter-terrorism units.
The meeting is understood to signal that any decision regarding Among’s political and legal future will largely depend on the findings of the Inspectorate of Government and other investigatiFor now, according to sources familiar with the discussions, Museveni’s position remains that the investigations must run their course before any conclusions are reached.
