Dangote Pledges $10 Billion to Power Africa, Shifts Focus Away from Steel
Billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has announced plans to redirect a massive $10 billion investment toward solving Africa’s power crisis. The announcement, made during a recent Al Jazeera interview, will see funds pulled from other projects, such as his steel business, to address the energy deficit affecting over 600 million Africans.
Speaking on his vision for the continent, Dangote stated, “In the next 3 to 4 years, Africa will witness major transformations. I intend to invest $10 billion in power but discontinue my steel business because we shouldn’t allow over 600 million Africans to sleep in darkness.”
Dangote views this pivot as a key driver for major economic transformation across the continent over the next three to four years, building upon the momentum of his recent refinery success.
The move has generated mixed reactions. While many welcome the initiative as a crucial step toward African self-sufficiency in energy, others have raised concerns. Critics worry about a single corporation dominating critical infrastructure across the continent, and question whether the ambitious timeline can be met amid ongoing government challenges and regulatory hurdles.
