Uganda Halts Military Ties with Türkiye Over Critic’s Extradition Row
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially suspended all military and defence cooperation with the Republic of Türkiye, effective immediately. The announcement, made on Saturday, September 19, 2026, stems from unresolved disputes tied to the extradition of Ugandan government critic and blogger Fred Lumbuye.
In an official press statement released from Kampala, Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information for the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs/UPDF, confirmed the drastic measure.
“The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has with immediate effect suspended all and any Defence and Military cooperation with the Republic of Türkiye,” the statement read. “The measure will remain in force until outstanding issues of mutual defence and military cooperation between the two countries are resolved.”
The Extradition Dispute
The diplomatic fallout centers on Fred Lumbuye, a Ugandan critic living in Turkey. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chair of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has demanded Lumbuye’s extradition to face charges of incitement and spreading false information. Tensions escalated following a protest by PLU supporters at the Turkish Embassy in Kampala, demanding Turkey hand over the blogger.
