Outgoing Queen Mother Clears Karuziika Palace Ahead of New Tooro King’s Coronation Amid Succession Dispute
KARUZIIKA PALACE — The outgoing Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, is clearing out Karuziika Palace of personal items and fixtures just days before the coronation of the new Tooro King, according to recent reports and video footage.
Clips shared on September 21 capture the current state of the palace, showing empty rooms with high ceilings, red-tiled floors, and only scattered items remaining. A report from CTV Uganda confirmed that items such as curtains are currently being removed by the outgoing Queen Mother.
The clearing of the palace is part of a significant transition period for the kingdom. It precedes the coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo, who is scheduled to be crowned at the same venue on September 29.
The transition follows the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, concluding a 31-year reign. The succession process has reportedly been disputed, involving the Babiito royal clan.
The removal of items from the palace has sparked differing opinions. Defenders of Kemigisa’s move characterize it as the standard removal of her personal belongings from a palace she played a role in rebuilding. Conversely, critics have called the action disrespectful to Tooro traditions, describing the current state of the royal home as an empty shell.
