UK Charges 65-Year-Old Man Over 1994 Rwanda Genocide
LONDON — A 65-year-old man appeared before a London magistrates court on Tuesday charged with involvement in the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
The suspect is accused of being an ancillary to genocide and aiding crimes against humanity. Prosecutors told the court that the man, who worked as a doctor at the time, was “party” to six murders in Kigali in April 1994.
Prosecutors said he was a leader or supervisor of physical acts of violence carried out by others.
He is the first person to be charged in the UK over the genocide, in which more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in 100 days in massacres orchestrated by the Hutu ruling majority.
The suspect has been bailed ahead of his next court appearance at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales on October 9.
