Uganda and China Discuss River Nyamwamba Flood Protections
Kasese District, Uganda — In a bid to address recurrent flooding in Uganda’s Rwenzori region, Hajjat Aminah Mukalazi this morning hosted a Chinese delegation from the China Gezhouba Group Co., Ltd (CGGC) to advance the River Nyamwamba Maintenance and Flood Protection Programme.
The high-level talks zeroed in on concrete steps to shield thousands of lives and livelihoods from the devastating impacts of recurrent flooding in Kasese District. The meeting built upon past mitigation efforts, including previous de-silting activities, and focused on a planned Shs360 billion initiative aimed at full river clearance and the construction of durable flood barriers.
The Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Wang Shengchun and Mr. Liu Zhenjze. They were joined alongside Eng. Steven Ogwete from Uganda’s Ministry of Water and Environment.
The collaborative discussions highlighted a shared push for economic resilience in the region. Following the roundtable chats, the parties engaged in a ceremonial gift exchange, featuring a red box, symbolizing the strengthened partnership.
Highlighting CGGC’s history of local job creation in Uganda, officials expressed optimism that the renewed collaboration will yield effective, community-focused results for the people of Kasese.
