NAIROBI – The Kenyan media fraternity is in mourning following the death of former journalist Kimani Mbugua, who died by suicide on Monday, October 14, 2025. He was 29 years old.

Mbugua, who previously worked for major broadcasters including Citizen TV and NTV, passed away at a mental health facility in Mombasa where he was receiving treatment for bipolar disorder.
His career in journalism began with great promise after he graduated from Moi University. Mbugua quickly became a recognizable face on Kenyan television, known for his work as a broadcast journalist.
However, his career trajectory was significantly altered after a 2019 incident involving alleged drug spiking. Following this, Mbugua’s public struggles with his mental health became more apparent, leading to multiple stays in rehabilitation centers. His journey to recovery was publicly supported by several figures, including former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
His death has sparked an outpouring of grief and has reignited conversations about mental health in Kenya. Advocates are using this tragedy to call for improved access to mental healthcare services across the country. The need is pressing, as reports indicate that up to 25% of outpatients in Kenya suffer from mental health conditions, yet the country faces a significant shortage of treatment facilities.
Mbugua’s passing is a stark reminder of the hidden battles many face and has prompted calls for greater support and de-stigmatization of mental illness within Kenyan society.
