NAIROBI – Construction of Kenya’s Talanta Stadium, the 60,000-seat centerpiece of the new Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, is progressing on schedule as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
President William Ruto shared aerial photographs of the ongoing construction in the Langata area on October 24, 2025, showcasing the venue’s development. The stadium forms the cornerstone of the broader Talanta Sports City project, which is designed to integrate sports infrastructure with youth development programs in both athletics and education.
Kenya, together with its East African neighbors, was awarded the hosting rights for the continental football tournament in September 2023. The Talanta Stadium project, estimated to cost approximately 45 billion Kenyan shillings, has generated significant public discourse. While many citizens have expressed national pride in the infrastructure development, the project has also sparked conversations about potentially renaming the facility in honor of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, alongside ongoing public concerns regarding construction costs and potential delays.
