MTN: No Timeline for Full Mobile Money Restoration in Uganda
MTN Uganda has stated there is no defined timeline for the full restoration of mobile money services, citing ongoing restrictions imposed by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
In a response on social media platform X, the telecom giant expressed regret for the inconvenience caused but clarified that the restrictions remain in place under a UCC directive. This update came after a user publicly appealed for the return of the mobile money network, stating, “We wish to work.”
The service disruption, which began ahead of Uganda’s general election on January 15, 2026, has left withdrawals as the most severely affected function. While users can send money, withdrawal services have been reported as unstable.
A nationwide internet shutdown commenced on January 13, 2026, with UCC stating the measures were necessary to curb misinformation, electoral fraud, and incitement to violence. Only essential services remained accessible during this period.
Partial internet restoration began on the evening of January 17, 2026, though access was not fully returned. By the morning of January 18, many users still could not access major social media platforms like Facebook and X, indicating selective blocking persisted.
The extended shutdown has severely disrupted daily business and commerce. Mobile money agents and traders are among the hardest hit, with reports of agency banking systems failing and customers left stranded due to the unreliable withdrawal services.
As of January 19, 2026, MTN’s communication indicates that customers should anticipate continued service limitations until further notice from regulatory authorities.
