KACITA Appoints Issa Sekitto as Acting Chairperson Amid Leadership Dispute
KAMPALA — The Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), the umbrella body representing Kampala’s business community, is facing a leadership shake-up following a bitter fallout among its top officials.
The dispute stems from the decision of outgoing Acting Chairman, Thadeus Musoke Nagenda, to join active politics under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. His move sparked outrage among traders and fellow executives, with some accusing him of having long harboured government-aligned interests that conflicted with the association’s mandate to independently advocate for traders.
In response, KACITA’s executive board convened an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday at the association’s Kampala offices, where they appointed veteran trader and spokesperson Issa Sekitto as Acting Chairperson. Sekitto will serve in this capacity for one year as the association undertakes a transitional process to revitalise its governance structures and ensure operational stability.
Musoke, who had been at the helm since August 2021, stepped down to pursue his political ambitions — a journey insiders suggest may prove challenging given the tensions surrounding his exit.
The leadership transition marks a pivotal moment for KACITA, which has been instrumental in championing the interests of traders in Uganda’s capital, especially in negotiations with government on taxation, trade policy, and market regulation.
