KAMPALA – The Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, has publicly expressed his frustration and anger over what he calls persistent and false rumours alleging he has used his high office to amass personal wealth.
Speaking to the media this week, Mayiga stated that since his appointment, a campaign of misinformation has been propagated against him, often given undue prominence by media outlets. He attributed these false stories primarily to his political enemies seeking to tarnish his reputation.
“Since I took office, such false accusations have been propagated and given media prominence, mostly by my enemies,” Mayiga explained.
One particular rumour from last year was cited by the Katikkiro as especially “infuriating.” The false story alleged that he was involved in private business dealings with the Nnabagereka (Queen of Buganda), Sylvia Nagginda.
Mayiga recounted a specific incident where the absurdity of the rumour hit home. He received a call from a well-educated friend who asked him if it was true that he had started a school with the Queen.
The Katikkiro clarified that the rumour appeared to stem from a simple coincidence: the Nnabagereka’s annual mentorship camp for young people, known as Ekisaakate, was hosted last year at Muzza High School in Kabembe, Mukono.
An visibly irate Mayiga described being deeply upset by the question from his friend. His response was blunt: he told her off to “use her head” and think critically about the baseless nature of the gossip.
The Prime Minister’s strong rebuttal highlights the growing tension and challenge of combating misinformation, even for high-ranking officials, and underscores his determination to clear his name against allegations he deems malicious and entirely without foundation.
