NAIROBI – The youth wing of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) has publicly denounced the recently formed political alliance between its party chairman, Gideon Moi, and President William Ruto.

The pact, which was solidified during a meeting at Moi’s Kabarak residence in Nakuru County on October 10, has been labeled by the KANU Youth Congress as a “betrayal” of the party’s core principles.

In a strong statement, youth leaders Shanice Matara and Lucy Atemo Mwangu criticized the alliance for lacking transparency, accountability, and democratic process. They expressed particular frustration over the exclusion of younger party members from consultations leading up to the agreement.
The youth wing also contended that the coalition clashes with KANU’s historical commitments to human rights and the rule of law. This internal conflict was further highlighted by the party’s recent withdrawal from the Baringo senatorial by-election, a move seen by many as connected to the new political realignment.
The public rift has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, drawing reactions from prominent figures including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The dispute signals significant internal divisions within KANU as the country begins to look toward the 2027 general elections.
