Kenya’s President Ruto Prepares Major Cabinet Reshuffle Following Political Shifts
NAIROBI – Kenyan President William Ruto is preparing for his fourth cabinet reshuffle by the end of October 2025, a strategic move prompted by significant political realignments, including a new pact with the KANU party and the recent passing of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The planned reshuffle aims to integrate key figures from Gideon Moi’s KANU party into the government, following a formal agreement with Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Simultaneously, the administration is seeking to co-opt members from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which has been navigating a leadership transition since Odinga’s death on October 19.
Sources indicate the reorganization will target several key ministerial positions. The changes are designed to reward political loyalists and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections. There is speculation that some current Cabinet Secretaries, including William Kabogo and Alfred Mutua, may be dropped from their roles. Additionally, the inclusion of members from the Odinga family is being considered as part of the outreach to ODM.
In response to these developments, the ODM party has convened an urgent meeting of its central committee scheduled for October 23. Party officials have stated their intention to resist what they characterize as an attempt to “hijack” the party during a period of transition.
