Non-Aligned Movement, Led by Uganda, Condemns U.S. “Act of War” Against Venezuela at UN
New York, January 5, 2026 – The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), representing 121 member states, has issued a forceful condemnation of the United States’ military operation in Venezuela, denouncing it as an illegal “act of war” that violates the core principles of the United Nations.
The statement was delivered by the delegation of the Republic of Uganda, which currently chairs the NAM Coordinating Bureau, during an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Monday.
On behalf of the bloc, Uganda categorically condemned the actions “perpetrated by the United States of America against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, since the early hours of 03 January 2026,” which it said included armed attacks on civilian and military locations in Caracas and other cities.
“The attacks in question, which blatantly violate the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, as well as the norms of international law, constitute an act of war,” the statement read. It warned that the operation undermines regional and international peace and security and threatens “the very right to life of the Venezuelan people.”
The NAM demanded an immediate end to all hostilities against Venezuela and called for full respect for the country’s “sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and inalienable right to self-determination.” The movement also insisted that those responsible for the acts of aggression “be held accountable.”
In a pointed rebuttal to the U.S. legal justification for targeting Nicolás Maduro, the NAM statement strongly reaffirmed “the inviolability of the immunities accorded to Heads of State and Government under international law.” It stated these immunities are a fundamental pillar of sovereign equality and warned that selectively disregarding them risks “destabilizing international relations and weakening the international legal order.”
The bloc expressed its “full solidarity with the People and Government” of Venezuela and insisted that “military solutions are not viable avenues for addressing any issue” between nations.
The strong condemnation from the large and diverse Non-Aligned Movement signals significant diplomatic backlash against the U.S. operation and sets the stage for a heated legal and political battle in the international arena over the precedent of cross-border military actions to apprehend foreign leaders.
