Kampala, Uganda — The National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president for Buganda and former Butambala County MP, Muwanga Kivumbi, has been granted bail by the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court after spending 250 days in detention.
Kivumbi was facing charges of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society. The charges stemmed from statements he made during a public gathering in July.
According to court proceedings, Kivumbi was granted a Shs3 million cash bail. Additionally, his sureties were each required to post Shs2 million in non-cash bonds.
Following the ruling, NUP leaders, including David Lewis Rubongoya and Joel Ssenyonyi, expressed relief at the court’s decision. However, they simultaneously voiced concerns over the potential for re-arrests.
Outside the courthouse, joyful scenes erupted among party supporters, who have continued to call for the release of all political prisoners.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Ssenyonyi confirmed the development, writing: “Hon Muwanga Kivumbi has finally been granted bail by Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court.” He accompanied the post with the party’s ongoing rallying cry: #FreeAllPoliticalPrisoners.
