SHOCKING: Zimbabwean Egg Hawker Shot Dead in Durban Over 50 Rand Dispute

DURBAN, South Africa – A Zimbabwean woman who was selling boiled eggs on a Durban street was shot dead this week after a customer refused to pay for eggs he had already consumed, in an incident that has reignited concerns over rising xenophobic violence in the country.
According to witnesses, a Zulu man ate five boiled eggs from the hawker but refused to pay the 50 rand owed. When the woman began lamenting and demanding her payment, the man allegedly drew a firearm and shot her twice in the head. She died at the scene.
The killing is the latest in a growing wave of attacks targeting foreign African nationals, fueled by rhetoric from individuals like Jacinta, a self-styled leader who has been mobilizing Zulu tribesmen to beat, maim, and kill black Africans from other nations.
Jacinta claims that foreign nationals—including Ghanaians, Tanzanians, Kenyans, Zimbabweans, Nigerians, and Batswana—have “taken over” economic opportunities that rightfully belong to Zulus. She specifically targets those running spaza shops, cafeterias, garages, chemist shops, and hawking businesses.
“How can you kill a woman selling eggs simply by claiming she has taken your opportunity?” asked one local resident who witnessed the aftermath. “She was feeding her family.”
Community leaders are calling for urgent police intervention and condemning the rise of vigilante violence. “Xenophobia has no place in Africa,” said one activist. “We are all Africans. Violence against our brothers and sisters from neighboring countries must stop.”
Police have launched a manhunt for the shooter. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
