JUBA, South Sudan – In a significant move underscoring the intertwining of national security and governance, His Excellency the President Salva Kiir Mayardit has promoted the Vice President and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster to the rank of General within the National Security Service (NSS).
The Vice President expressed his profound gratitude for the honour, stating, “I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to H.E. the President and the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces… for the honour of promoting me to the rank of General.” He acknowledged President Kiir’s longstanding mentorship, noting his career has been guided and challenged to take on greater responsibilities in service to the nation.
The promotion places the Vice President at the highest echelons of the country’s premier security organ. In a statement, he praised the NSS as “the guardian of our sovereignty, peace, and stability,” and saluted the men and women of the Service for their daily sacrifices.
He further outlined a vision for his new role, pledging a devotion to the core principles of “loyalty, discipline, and service above self.” Crucially, he highlighted his unique dual role, vowing to leverage his position as Chairperson of the Economic Cluster to ensure that “our security institutions and operations support sustainable economic growth in the country.”
This alignment of security and economic policy, he suggested, is fundamental to the nation’s future. The ultimate goal, he stated, is to build the confidence of every South Sudanese citizen “to live in peace and raise their children in a nation of progress and opportunity.”
The Vice President also extended his appreciation to the First Lady, H.E. Mama Mary Ayen Mayardit, and her family for their personal support and guidance, crediting her for instilling the strength and values that form the foundation of his leadership.
The promotion signals a continued consolidation of leadership roles under trusted officials as the nation navigates its path toward stability and development.
