Uganda Government Shakes Up UEDCL Leadership, Appoints Acting MD
KAMPALA, Uganda – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has announced an immediate leadership shakeup at the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), terminating the Board Chairperson and placing the Managing Director on forced leave.
In a press statement issued on May 2, 2026, the government confirmed that the services of the Board Chairperson have been terminated, while Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa has been sent on forced leave to allow for a “comprehensive review” of the company’s management and operations.
To ensure stability and uninterrupted service delivery, shareholders have appointed Ms. Stella-Marie Biwaga Cingtho as Interim Board Chairperson. Subsequently, the Board has named Eng. Joselynne Rwakakooko as Acting Managing Director, replacing Mr. Mwesigwa.
Prior to her appointment, Eng. Rwakakooko served as UEDCL’s Chief Commercial and Operations Officer.
“These actions are part of routine governance and oversight procedures aimed at strengthening institutional performance, accountability, and service delivery within the energy sector,” said Hon. Can. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Minister for Energy and Mineral Development.
The Ministry assured the public that electricity supply and distribution services will continue without interruption during the transition period. The interim arrangements will remain in place until the vacant positions are substantively filled.
