BUSEGA, UGANDA – A targeted operation to reclaim and clear drainage channels that have been encroached upon within the road reserve along the vital Busega-Mityana Road is now underway.
The exercise, which began this week, is being conducted by the Enforcement Team from the Road Reserve Management Unit, a specialized division under the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The operation aims to remove all illegal structures, waste, and obstructions that have been built or dumped within the legally protected road reserve area. These encroachments have been blamed for blocking critical drainage pathways, leading to persistent flooding, waterlogging, and accelerated deterioration of the road surface, especially during the rainy seasons.
Officials from the Ministry emphasized that the clearance is essential for protecting the significant government investment in the road infrastructure and ensuring the safety and smooth flow of traffic. Properly functioning drainage systems are crucial for channeling water away from the road, preventing potholes, washouts, and other damage that can cause accidents and costly repairs.
“The Ministry is committed to safeguarding all road reserves across the country. This operation on the Busega-Mityana corridor is a clear message that encroachments will not be tolerated as they directly compromise the integrity and lifespan of our infrastructure,” a statement from the Ministry read in part.
Motorists and residents living along the route are advised to expect the presence of enforcement personnel and machinery as the operation continues. The public is also urged to cooperate with authorities and to refrain from any activities that involve the illegal use of road reserves.
The clearance drive is expected to improve drainage efficiency, reduce flood-related risks, and contribute to a safer, more reliable travel experience for all road users.
