OCTOBER 18, 2025 – In a swift response to widespread criticism, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended the controversial new format for the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. The 2025/2026 season will immediately revert to the traditional double round-robin home-and-away system.
The announcement was made by FUFA President, Moses Magogo, who cited significant opposition from fans, clubs, and other stakeholders as the reason for the reversal. The unpopular split-league structure had been blamed for contributing to empty stadiums in the early part of the season.
Despite the format change, the results from the two league games already played under the new system will be preserved and carried forward into the revised competition.
President Magogo stated that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with the clubs, league sponsors StarTimes Uganda, and the Uganda Premier League board. He further revealed that the federation plans to use the coming year to educate and explain the now-rejected reforms to stakeholders, suggesting the conversation around league structure may not be over.
The move has been met with approval online, with outlets like NBS Sport prompting discussions about the decision and the leadership of former Vipers SC President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, a known proponent of the traditional league format.
