Ghana Condemns “Demeaning” Treatment of Citizens at Israeli Airport, Vows to Defend Dignity
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Ablakwa, has issued a strong condemnation of what he calls the “unfair and unacceptable” treatment of Ghanaian citizens abroad, following a distressing incident at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport.
The minister’s comments come in response to an event on December 7, where several Ghanaian travellers were detained or deported upon arrival. The group was reportedly travelling to attend a cybersecurity conference. Despite having valid travel documents, only one member of the delegation was allowed entry into Israel. The others faced detention or immediate deportation without being provided a clear explanation for the decision.
Speaking on a radio programme, Minister Ablokwa expressed profound disappointment and anger over the incident. He stressed that such actions were not only disrespectful to the individuals involved but also to the nation of Ghana.
“The Black race is not inferior,” Ablakwa declared emphatically. “Ghana will always stand up and defend the dignity of its people. We find this treatment demeaning and completely unacceptable.”
The Minister underscored the principle of mutual respect in international relations. He urged all nations to afford Ghanaian travellers the same level of respect and courtesy that Ghana extends to foreign visitors within its borders.
“We welcome visitors from across the globe with open arms and treat them with utmost respect,” he stated. “We simply expect the same for our citizens when they travel abroad.”
The incident has sparked concern and calls for a formal diplomatic inquiry. While the specific reasons for Israel’s actions remain unclear, Minister Ablakwa’s firm stance signals that the Ghanaian government will be seeking answers and assurances to prevent any recurrence.
The strong rhetoric from the Foreign Minister reinforces Ghana’s ongoing commitment to proactive citizen diplomacy, where the state actively intervenes to protect the rights and dignity of its nationals overseas. The government is expected to engage with Israeli authorities through diplomatic channels to address the matter.
