Abim District Celebrates Milestone as First Artisanal Mining License is Launched
Abim, Uganda — In a landmark achievement for Uganda’s mining sector, the Minister of State for Minerals, Hon. Nyamutoro, yesterday officially launched the Kakoka Artisanal Mining Cooperative Society Limited. The cooperative has been officially licensed as AML006644, becoming the first entity to secure an Artisanal Mining License in the country.
The historic event was attended by local leaders and stakeholders, including Hon. Esther Aanyakun, who joined the celebrations in Abim District.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Nyamutoro congratulated the members of Kakoka and all the miners involved in the achievement. The granting of this license marks the end of a rigorous journey characterized by back-and-forth processes and a steadfast commitment to compliance. The Minister commended the patience exhibited by the miners and their appreciation of the Mining and Minerals Act 2022.
The success of Kakoka serves as a recommendation and a blueprint for other artisanal miners across the country. The Ministry has urged other artisans to cooperate with regulatory bodies to receive the necessary support and get formalized, ensuring a safer and more profitable industry for all.
This development is viewed as the beginning of a comprehensive gold project in Abim, built on the pillars of sustainable, responsible mining and value addition. It is anticipated that this milestone will pave the way for many more cooperatives to mushroom, attracting bigger investments into the region.
