Masaka High Court Dismisses Ssempijja’s Election Petition Against Kalungu East MP Nkeretanyi
MASAKA, UGANDA — The Masaka High Court has dismissed an election petition filed by former Defence Minister Vincent Ssempijja challenging the victory of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Yusuf Kiruluuta Nkeretanyi as the Member of Parliament for Kalungu East. The court ruled that the petition was filed outside the statutory deadline.
According to the ruling, delivered by Justice Joyce Kavuma and read by Deputy Registrar Roy Karungi, the court could not extend the legal time limit for filing the petition. As a result, the case was dismissed, with each side bearing its own legal costs.
The court’s decision upholds Nkeretanyi’s electoral victory. During the polls, Nkeretanyi secured 15,473 votes, defeating Ssempijja, who garnered 13,219 votes.
Following the dismissal, Nkeretanyi celebrated the outcome as a victory for his constituents, pledging to focus on service delivery. Crowds gathered in jubilation to celebrate the court’s decision.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the MP-elect expressed his gratitude, stating: “Petition dismissed for being filed outside the required time. We serve a living God. Congratulations to the people of Kalungu East.” He accompanied the post with the hashtag #PeoplePowerOurPower.
