Critical Bridge on Arua-Nebbi Road Closed Indefinitely After Damage from Overloaded Trucks
ARUA, Uganda – September 19, 2025 – The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the Okollo Steel Bridge to all heavy goods vehicles and buses after its structural integrity was severely compromised.
The critical bridge, located on the major Arua-Nebbi road, was damaged by trucks carrying loads that exceeded the allowable height restrictions. An official public notice states that the bridge can no longer safely accommodate heavy traffic, posing a significant public safety risk.
Effective immediately, only light vehicles will be permitted to use the bridge. The closure is expected to cause major disruptions to freight and passenger transport in the region.
To mitigate the impact, the Ministry has outlined the following alternative routes for trucks and buses:
· Kampala-Arua Traffic: Vehicles must divert after the Pakwach bridge and use the Pakwach-Inde-Ocoko road.
· Nebbi-Arua Traffic: Vehicles should use either the Anyiribu-Ullepi road or the Nebbi-Zombo-Vurra-Arua road.
The Ministry has issued a stern reminder to all truck operators to adhere to the prescribed load limit of 4.2 meters.
A team of bridge engineers is currently on-site conducting a detailed inspection. The findings from this assessment will determine the fastest method for repairs. The Ministry has committed to a swift resolution, pledging to complete retrofitting work and restore full access within six weeks.
The closure takes immediate effect. The Ministry has apologized for the inconvenience and asked the public for patience while essential safety works are carried out.
