
Former Minister and Renowned Author Mary Karooro Okurut Passes Away
It is with deep sorrow that the nation mourns the passing of Honorable Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut, a celebrated educator, author, and former Cabinet Minister. Born on December 8, 1954, Okurut was a distinguished leader whose impactful career spanned education, politics, and public service.
The news of her death was shared by MP Margaret Muhanga in a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter), describing Okurut as her “bosom buddy,” literature teacher, mentor, and “her world.” Muhanga expressed profound grief, calling the loss a sting she will never forget and prayed that angels receive her in glory.
Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut served as Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, former Minister of National Security, and represented Bushenyi District as Woman MP. Throughout her public service, she was admired for her dedication, compassion, and commitment to Uganda’s development and women’s empowerment.
