Makerere University Hosts Major International Conference on AI for Africa’s Future

KAMPALA, Uganda – Makerere University has officially launched the 5th Biennial International Conference of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), focusing on the critical role of research, innovation, and artificial intelligence in transforming the continent.
The event, which opened on October 29, 2025, has gathered more than 500 delegates to the university’s campus, known as “The Hill,” for a three-day forum aimed at addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges.

In his opening address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, set the tone by posing fundamental questions for the continent’s future. He highlighted issues such as feeding Africa’s rapidly growing population, ensuring the health of its people, creating jobs for the youthful demographic, resolving persistent conflicts, and leveraging artificial intelligence to lift people out of poverty.
The conference, held under the theme “Research, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence for Africa’s Transformation,” features plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops. Key speakers, including Uganda’s Minister of Science, Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza, emphasized the practical applications of AI in sectors like agriculture and healthcare. They also stressed the importance of ethical development and stronger partnerships between universities and industries.
The discussions and collaborations fostered at the conference are intended to contribute to policy reforms and align with the broader goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The event is being widely shared on social media using the hashtag #MakARUA2025.
