South Sudan’s Kiir Arrives in Kampala Ahead of Museveni’s Seventh Inauguration
KAMPALA, Uganda — South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has become the first foreign leader to arrive in Uganda for President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Kololo Independence Grounds.
Kiir touched down on May 10, underscoring the longstanding ties and regional cooperation between the neighboring nations, according to statements from State House Uganda.
Shortly after Kiir’s arrival, Uganda also welcomed H.E. Azouz Nasri, President of the Council of the Nation of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, who is representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the ceremony. Nasri arrived with a 10-member delegation, reflecting growing Uganda-Algeria cooperation in areas including trade, energy, mining, and diplomacy.

Museveni’s seventh inauguration follows his victory in the January 2026 election, where he secured 71.65% of the vote, defeating opposition candidate Bobi Wine who received 24-33%. Opposition claims of electoral fraud were later withdrawn.
Approximately 40,000 guests and 35 heads of state are expected to attend the event, which is themed around economic progress. Delegations from Algeria, Burundi, and South Sudan have already arrived.
While the government highlights decades of stability, opposition parties including the FDC are boycotting the ceremony over election disputes. No protests have been planned.
The ceremony is set to proceed on Tuesday as scheduled.
