Tanzania Mourns First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan
Regional leaders offer condolences as nation grieves the loss of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s husband
Tanzania is in mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar . He was 76 years old .
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the passing, stating that Mr Ameir had been receiving treatment for a heart condition before his death at approximately 8:00 AM local time .
A Private Life Alongside a Public Leader
Mr Ameir, an agricultural academic by profession, largely maintained a low public profile throughout his wife’s political career . He became Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman when President Samia assumed office in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli .
The couple married in 1978, before President Samia entered national politics, and had four children together—three sons and a daughter . Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, followed in her mother’s footsteps, serving as a politician in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives .
Regional Leaders Express Solidarity
The news has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the East African region. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his “deep sorrow” on behalf of the Government and people of Kenya .
“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” President Ruto wrote in a social media post . “Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief” .
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema conveyed his deepest condolences, stating that Zambia stands “side by side with the first family, and all citizens of the United Republic of Tanzania during this difficult time” .
Rwandan President Paul Kagame also offered his sincere condolences, saying the Government and people of Rwanda stand in solidarity with President Samia and the people of Tanzania as they honour “the life and legacy of H.E. Hafidh Ameir Hassan” .
Funeral Arrangements
Vice President Ndejembi confirmed that funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, a village on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar, where Mr Ameir’s family originates . Further details regarding the burial programme are expected to be announced by the government and the family .
Mr Ameir’s passing marks a moment of national grief for Tanzania, as the nation unites in support of their President and her family during this difficult time.
