Uganda Media Chief Questions Cost of NRM’s $100,000 Drone Show
KAMPALA, Uganda — Alan Kasujja, newly appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, has publicly questioned the cost of a lavish drone light show organized by President Museveni’s ruling NRM party ahead of his seventh-term swearing-in ceremony.
The 15-minute display, which took place over Naguru Hill, featured more than 350 synchronized drones forming images including the crested crane and a “Thank You” message, capped off with fireworks visible across multiple districts. The event reportedly cost $100,000.
Kasujja took to X (formerly Twitter) with a pointed remark: “The things we’d have drone with that money at the Media Centre…”
His comment drew mixed reactions online, with some users echoing his critique and calling for better use of public funds amid ongoing economic pressures, while others defended the celebration. The exchange highlights growing tensions between festive displays of political power and the pressing needs of Ugandans facing rising living costs.
The Media Centre serves as government’s primary communications hub, and Kasujja’s public questioning of NRM party spending — even in jest — has sparked particular interest given his official role.
