KAMPALA – In a significant diplomatic achievement, Uganda has been elected to the governing council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The election was held during the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada, positioning the nation at the heart of global aviation decision-making for the 2025-2028 term.

Uganda’s successful bid was marked by a strong show of support, with the country securing 155 votes out of 185 cast by the 192 Member States, following a competitive electoral process.
The Ugandan delegation at the assembly was led by the Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala. He was accompanied by Uganda’s High Commissioner to Canada, Ambassador Allan Kajik, and the Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Mr. Fred Bamwesigye, along with other senior officials from the ministry and aviation authority.
The ICAO Council is the highest governing body of this United Nations specialized agency. It is tasked with establishing the critical global Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) that govern the safety, security, efficiency, and environmental sustainability of international air travel.
This landmark election grants Uganda a influential voice in shaping the future of the global aviation industry. It is expected to enhance the country’s international standing and provide new opportunities for the development of its own aviation sector.
