KAMPALA, Uganda – Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clive Nsiima has been released on bail following his arrest for assaulting a female fuel attendant, an incident that was captured on video and sparked widespread public outrage.
Nsiima was arraigned before the Criminal Court at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) on charges of assault and threatening violence. The court granted him bail set at UGX 1 million in cash and UGX 5 million in non-cash terms for his sureties. This development comes after the prosecution had objected to his release.
The case stems from an incident on October 13 at a Shell fuel station in Kyanja, Kampala. A viral video showed ASP Nsiima slapping the attendant, Sandra Namubiru, after she reportedly refused to offer fuel on credit. The footage prompted swift condemnation from the Uganda Police Force, which denounced the act as “unprofessional conduct” and initiated an internal investigation. Nsiima was subsequently arrested on October 14.
The court’s decision to grant bail has drawn criticism from segments of the public, with many questioning the perceived leniency shown to a police officer compared to the often-lengthy pre-trial detentions faced by opposition figures and activists.
The trial for ASP Clive Nsiima is scheduled to begin on November 6.
