US Funding Cut Threatens African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Somalia
African leaders hold emergency talks as Washington plans to end financial support by 2026
The African Union has convened an urgent meeting following the United States’ announcement that it will terminate funding for critical peacekeeping operations in Somalia by the end of 2026.
The financial support currently sustains approximately 12,000 African peacekeepers deployed to assist Somali government forces in their ongoing campaign against the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab. The funding covers essential operational costs including food supplies, fuel, transportation, medical care, and equipment for the multinational force.
Since 2007, the United States has contributed nearly $2 billion to African Union missions in Somalia, making it one of the largest donors to the peacekeeping effort.
Washington has justified its decision by stating that Somalia’s federal government has not demonstrated sufficient progress in assuming primary responsibility for the nation’s security. US officials have expressed frustration over what they perceive as inadequate steps by Somali authorities to build indigenous military capacity and governance structures.
In response, African Union officials have initiated a search for alternative funding sources to fill the impending gap. Diplomatic sources indicate that several member states are exploring contributions from other international partners, though no concrete commitments have been announced.
Security analysts warn that without new financial backing, the peacekeeping mission could face significant operational constraints, potentially creating conditions for al-Shabaab to expand its territorial control. The militant group has waged a deadly insurgency in Somalia for more than fifteen years and continues to pose a serious threat to stability in the Horn of Africa region.
The outcome of the African Union’s emergency deliberations remains uncertain as officials race against time to secure the mission’s future before the US withdrawal takes effect.
