Minerals Protection Unit Closes Illegal Gold Mine in Namayingo Over Safety Concerns
Namayingo, Uganda – The Uganda Police Force’s Minerals Protection Unit has closed an illegal gold mining site in Namayingo District following serious safety concerns and a recent underground collapse that trapped several miners.
The operation, led by the Zonal Commander, took place on 2nd June 2026 at a site located in Mabuka Village, Bukana Sub-county. Authorities began the closure at 2:12 PM to protect individuals who have been engaging in dangerous, unauthorized mining activities.
Recent Incident Triggers Action
The decision to shut down the operation came after a near-tragic incident on Sunday, 31st May 2026, at approximately 1:00 PM. On that day, six people were rescued after becoming trapped underground when a section of the illegal mine caved in and collapsed during active mining.
No fatalities were reported, but the collapse underscored the extreme risks posed by unregulated excavation in the area.
Ongoing Enforcement
According to the Minerals Protection Unit, the operation remains active, including nighttime patrols, to ensure that all individuals vacate the site completely. Officers are also taking measures to prevent any resumption of illegal mining activities at the location.
The Uganda Police Force continues to warn the public against engaging in unlicensed mining, which not only violates national mineral laws but also poses severe risks to life and safety.
