Socialite ‘Don Chris’ Arrested Over Shs5 Billion Overseas Job Scam Involving Over 500 Victims
Ugandan police have arrested Christian Asiimwe, known as Don Chris, ending a year-long manhunt for the former labour export firm director over a massive fraudulent recruitment scheme.
Kampala, Uganda – Socialite Christian Asiimwe, popularly known as Don Chris, has been arrested by Ugandan police in connection with a multi-billion shilling overseas job scam that defrauded over 500 job seekers . He was apprehended around 2:00 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at a local bar in Zana, Wakiso District .
Asiimwe, a former director of the now-defunct Sky Pins Tours and Travel, had been on the run for over a year after police opened a general inquiry file against him in June 2025 . The arrest follows his quiet return to Uganda .
Allegations and Victim Impact
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Racheal Kawala, Asiimwe is accused of obtaining money by false pretences between 2022 and 2025 . He allegedly promised unsuspecting Ugandans employment opportunities abroad, including positions as waiters, cleaners, and caregivers in Canada, the UK, Germany, Dubai, and Qatar .
The scale of the alleged fraud is significant, with police having recorded statements from more than 500 victims . Each victim reportedly paid between UGX 5 million and UGX 10 million, depending on the job and destination . Total losses from the scheme are estimated to range from UGX 500 million to over UGX 5 billion .
Asiimwe fled Uganda around June 2025 after the investigation began. While in hiding, reportedly in South Africa and Europe, he posted videos online mocking the allegations and daring authorities to arrest him .
Police Statement and Public Warning
“Investigations are ongoing, and he will be presented before court in accordance with the law,” said SP Racheal Kawala in a statement . Police have urged the public to verify the licensing status of recruitment agencies with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development before making payments .
“Asiimwe is currently in police custody as investigations continue,” Kawala confirmed . The case has drawn attention to the growing number of fraudulent labour recruitment schemes targeting vulnerable Ugandans seeking work abroad
