
Tooro King’s Death Highlights Uganda’s Critical Lack of PET Scans, Prompting Ushs 180 Billion Government Intervention
Kampala, Uganda — The passing of the Tooro Kingdom leader, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at the age of 34, has ignited a national conversation regarding Uganda’s medical infrastructure, specifically the absence of advanced cancer diagnostic tools.
According to reports by The Observer, the late King initially sought treatment at high-end hospitals in Kampala after experiencing persistent back pain. Despite undergoing X-rays and MRI scans, doctors in the capital reportedly told him they saw nothing abnormal. Seeking further medical intervention, the King, who was a person of means, traveled to a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. There, he was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away a year later.
The disparity in diagnosis has raised questions about Uganda’s medical capabilities. As The Observer highlights, Nairobi’s ability to detect the cancer was largely due to its access to Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans—a technology currently unavailable in Kampala and the rest of Uganda.
A PET scan is a vital tool for detecting tiny tumors often missed by X-rays or MRIs. According to The Observer, the cost of a single PET scan machine is approximately $3 million (Shs 11.7 billion), a figure equivalent to roughly 17 Land Cruisers. The publication noted the stark contrast between the government’s capacity to accommodate numerous officials at meetings versus its inability to acquire a PET scan until now.
Government Announces Major Cancer Facility
In response to the public outcry and the identified gaps in the healthcare system, the government has announced a significant investment in cancer treatment and diagnostics.
Dr. Diana Atwine, a Health Ministry official, confirmed that the government has allocated Ushs 180 billion for the construction of a “global standard PET/Nuclear Medicine facility” at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI). This facility will be equipped with three PET machines and a cyclotron, the latter being essential for producing radioisotopes and tracers needed for the scans.
Dr. Atwine stated that the first PET machine is expected to arrive this month and is anticipated to be fully functional by the end of the year. The project also encompasses nuclear medicine treatment facilities, a SPECT scan (which is already installed), and cold kit production units. Furthermore, the government plans to construct interventional radiology suites, endoscopy, and colonoscopy suites at UCI, alongside expanding inpatient and outpatient facilities and radiotherapy capabilities.
To bring services closer to the public, regional cancer centers are also being established or expanded in Arua, Mbale (upcoming), Mbarara, and Gulu (already operational).
Skepticism Amidst Promises
While the initiative has been welcomed by some, others remain skeptical. Dr. Jacob Otile raised concerns about the government’s ability to deliver on its promises on time, pointing to past delays in providing functional Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and MRI machines.
The new facility aims to drastically improve early cancer detection in Uganda, potentially saving lives by identifying tumors that traditional imaging might miss, and significantly reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for critical care.
