NRM Suspends Youth League Elections Amid Controversy Over Chairmanship Declaration
KAMPALA – The highly anticipated National Resistance Movement (NRM) Youth League elections have been abruptly suspended with immediate effect, following a contentious declaration in the chairmanship race.
The decision, announced by the party’s Secretary General, halts all voting processes for every position indefinitely. The move comes in the wake of significant controversy surrounding the proclamation of Collins Tanga as the Youth League Chairman.
According to a statement from the NRM’s Secretariat, the suspension was deemed necessary to address the irregularities and disputes that emerged during the electoral process. “All voting activities for the Youth League have been suspended until further notice,” the Secretary General declared. “This pause will allow the party leadership to thoroughly review the process and ensure fairness and transparency.”
The controversy erupted shortly after Tanga was declared the winner of the chairmanship seat. Allegations of procedural flaws, unfair practices, and a lack of consensus on the declaration process prompted swift intervention from the party’s top officials.
Delegates and other aspirants had raised objections, creating a tense atmosphere that threatened to undermine the integrity of the entire election. The party leadership, in a bid to prevent further discord and maintain unity within its influential youth wing, opted for a complete suspension.
This development leaves the leadership of the NRM Youth League in a state of uncertainty. The party has not provided a specific timeline for when the elections might be rescheduled, stating only that activities will remain frozen “until further notice.”
All eyes are now on the NRM’s Electoral Commission and top leadership as they work to resolve the impasse and establish a clear path forward for the youth elections.
