Florida Congressman Urges DHS to Revoke Citizenship of NYC Mayoral Frontrunner
WASHINGTON — Florida Republican Congressman Randy Fine has called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to initiate denaturalization proceedings against Zohran Kwame Mamdani, the Democratic frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race.
In a letter dated October 21, Rep. Fine alleges that Mamdani made omissions on his 2018 U.S. citizenship application. The congressman specifically claims Mamdani failed to disclose his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and his support for individuals convicted of providing funds to Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018, won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor in June. He currently serves as a member of the New York State Assembly, where he has built his platform on issues such as housing affordability, public transit, and policing reform.
The move by the Florida congressman has drawn swift criticism. Muslim advocacy groups and fellow Democrats have labeled the effort as politically motivated and Islamophobic. They argue it represents an attempt to weaponize the immigration system against a political opponent.
Mamdani himself has dismissed the allegations. He has continued his campaign activities unabated, focusing on his core policy issues in the lead-up to the general election.
The DHS has not publicly commented on Rep. Fine’s request. Denaturalization is a rare and complex legal process, typically reserved for cases where citizenship was obtained through willful concealment of a material fact or fraud.
