President Museveni Bids Farewell to Outgoing Chinese Ambassador, Hails Growing Bilateral Ties
KISOZI, GOMBA DISTRICT – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday hosted the outgoing Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Uganda, His Excellency Zhang Lizhong, for a farewell courtesy call at his country home in Kisozi, Gomba District.
The President congratulated Ambassador Lizhong upon the completion of his tour of duty in Uganda, extending his well-wishes for the diplomat’s next assignment. “I wish you well in your next assignment,” President Museveni said.
Reflecting on the state of Uganda-China relations, President Museveni expressed satisfaction with the strengthening bilateral partnership. He particularly highlighted the growth in Ugandan exports to the Chinese market, which have now reached USD 138 million.
“I am happy to note that Uganda’s exports to China have increased to USD 138 million, although this is still not enough and we should be able to do much more,” the President stated.
A significant point of appreciation was the Chinese Government’s decision to remove taxes on Ugandan exports, a move President Museveni said “will greatly support the country’s trade and wealth creation efforts.”
Reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to Chinese investments within its borders, the President noted, “Regarding Chinese investments in Uganda, we have been supporting Chinese interests for a long time and we shall continue to do so.”
In his remarks, Ambassador Zhang Lizhong conveyed his gratitude to President Museveni and the Government of Uganda for the support and collaboration extended to him throughout his tenure.
The meeting underscores the continued diplomatic engagement and evolving economic cooperation between Kampala and Beijing, with a renewed focus on boosting trade volumes and investment.
