KCCA Secures 1,980 Market Spaces Outside Kampala Ahead of Street Vendor Eviction Deadline
KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, has announced that the authority has secured 1,980 market spaces outside Kampala to accommodate street vendors ahead of the February 19, 2026, deadline to clear city roads.
Speaking at City Hall, Ms Buzeki revealed that the alternative spaces are part of government efforts to enforce trade order in the city while ensuring vendors are not left without options for their livelihoods.
“We have provided 1,980 spaces outside Kampala to ensure that no vendor is left without an alternative. The time for operating on the streets is coming to an end,” she said.
The directive, initially issued on February 5, follows growing concerns over congestion, poor sanitation, and public safety within the city centre. Ms Buzeki noted that KCCA currently manages 17 public markets within the city alongside 69 privately owned markets, providing ample trading locations for vendors.
She urged traders to relocate voluntarily before enforcement begins, emphasising that sufficient space exists for all affected vendors.
“No one should claim there is no space. Markets are available both within and outside the city,” she stressed.
The relocation initiative aims to restore order in Kampala’s central business district while providing legitimate trading opportunities for street vendors in designated market areas.
