Uganda Arrests 231 Foreign Nationals in Immigration Crackdown

KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan authorities have arrested 231 foreign nationals in coordinated operations targeting illegal immigration and undocumented business activities, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced.

The suspects were detained during two major operations on April 27 in Adjumani and the Bukoto-Ntinda area of Kampala, according to ministry spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi.
In Adjumani, 62 Nigerian nationals were arrested for operating a church and businesses without proper permits. Authorities also allege the group was involved in cyber fraud, seizing computers linked to scams and illegal betting operations.
A second operation in Kampala’s Bukoto-Ntinda district led to the arrest of 169 foreign nationals at an apartment complex. Those detained include individuals from Pakistan, India, and Ghana who lacked valid immigration documents and were suspected of operating ventures without authorization.
Mundeyi said investigations into illegal work permits, visa violations, and unlawful business activities are ongoing. Officials acting on public tips are now processing the suspects.
The crackdown reflects growing concerns over job competition, tax evasion, and security risks posed by undocumented immigrants. Authorities have called on landlords to verify tenants’ immigration papers.
“The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control has arrested more than 200 suspected illegal immigrants in a series of coordinated operations across the country,” Mundeyi confirmed.
