MUMBAI – In a landmark moment for the Indian automotive industry, Tesla has officially delivered its first vehicle in the country. The recipient of the inaugural Model Y is Siddharth Jain, Executive Director of the prominent Inox Group.
The delivery comes just weeks after the electric vehicle giant opened its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025, marking Tesla’s formal entry into the world’s third-largest car market. The moment was celebrated on social media by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who replied to Jain’s post on X with a simple “Congrats!” The exchange, highlighting the successful delivery, has garnered significant online attention, with over 65,000 likes.
In his post, Jain expressed his excitement, stating, “I am beyond thrilled to receive India Inc’s 1st @Tesla !”
This initial phase of Tesla’s India rollout is focused on delivering to premium customers in key metropolitan areas like Mumbai and Delhi. However, despite considerable social media buzz and enthusiasm for the brand’s arrival, the company faces early challenges. The high price point, approximately ₹60 lakh, is a significant barrier for many consumers. This cost is largely driven by high import duties applied to completely built-up units (CBUs).
Reports indicate that since its launch, Tesla has secured just over 600 orders. A recurring topic of discussion among potential buyers and enthusiasts online is the need for local manufacturing, which would drastically reduce the vehicle’s price and make it more competitive against more affordable domestic EV options.
The delivery to Siddharth Jain is a symbolic first step for Tesla in India, but its long-term success is widely seen as dependent on the company’s ability to navigate import taxes and potentially establish local production to improve affordability for the broader market.
