Headline: U.S. and Nigeria Seal $5.1 Billion Health Partnership, Largest of Its Kind Under America First Strategy.

In a significant move to advance global health security, the United States has signed a landmark five-year, $5.1 billion bilateral health cooperation agreement with the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aligned with the America First Global Health Strategy, represents the largest co-investment by any nation under the initiative to date.
Under the terms of the agreement, the United States intends to provide $2.1 billion in support**, while Nigeria commits to investing an additional **$3.0 billion in new domestic health spending over the next five years. This substantial matched funding model aims to create a sustainable impact on Nigeria’s healthcare system.
A key component of the MOU is the dedication of approximately $200 million to support more than 900 Christian faith-based healthcare facilities across Nigeria. These clinics, which represent about 10% of the country’s health providers, disproportionately serve over 30% of Nigeria’s population of 230 million, often operating in remote and underserved regions. The funding will expand access to integrated services for HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and maternal and child health.
The partnership addresses critical challenges. Nigeria faces one of the world’s highest maternal and child mortality rates and bears approximately 30% of the global malaria burden. Strengthening the country’s health infrastructure is seen as vital not only for saving Nigerian lives but also for preventing the international spread of disease, thereby protecting American lives and interests.
U.S. officials framed the investment as a strategic pillar of the America First Global Health Strategy, emphasizing that bolstering health systems abroad directly contributes to making America “safer, stronger, and more prosperous.” The MOU is designed to strengthen the broader bilateral partnership between the two nations through shared commitment and substantial Nigerian leadership in co-financing.
