Uganda Cranes’ Morocco Friendlies Cancelled Over Public Health Concerns Amid Ebola Fears
Marrakech, Morocco – June 3, 2026
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially cancelled the Uganda Cranes’ two international friendly matches scheduled in Morocco, citing sanitary and public health issues raised by Moroccan authorities.
The matches, which were set to take place as part of the Morocco Africa Series 2026 preparations, were against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on June 5 and Madagascar on June 8. The cancellations come despite the Cranes having already arrived in Morocco and begun preparations.
Background and Reasons for Cancellation
Moroccan authorities flagged concerns linked to an ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, with reports of over 900 suspected cases and approximately 200 deaths.
Tanzania’s national team has also reportedly returned home, leaving Uganda without opponents for the planned fixtures. Several other nations involved in the series — including Rwanda, Burundi, and Equatorial Guinea — had also arrived in Morocco before the decision was made.
A statement from FUFA and reports from multiple Ugandan sports outlets confirmed that the decision was communicated through match agents following health and sanitation assessments.
Impact on AFCON 2027 Preparations
The friendlies were intended to help the Cranes build momentum ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, which Uganda will co-host alongside other nations. The cancellations represent a significant setback in the team’s preparation schedule during this international window.
Coach and technical team officials are now expected to explore alternative arrangements or organise the squad’s return.
Reactions on X (Twitter)
The story quickly became a trending topic in Uganda and East Africa, with fans expressing disappointment over the lost preparation time while acknowledging the importance of prioritising health and safety. Many posts highlighted the frustration of the team travelling only for the games to be called off.
This incident echoes past instances in African football where Ebola outbreaks have disrupted major sporting events, including previous concerns around tournaments in the region.
What’s Next?
FUFA is yet to issue a detailed statement on alternative preparation plans. The Cranes’ focus now shifts fully to domestic squad building and upcoming qualifiers for the co-hosted AFCON 2027.
